From olympian to corporate olympians: Dr. Greg Wells

Dr. Greg Wells and the 53rd Group

As part of our Life Well Lived 2.0 (LWL) lunch speaker series, Dr. Greg Wells recently presented to our LWL participants. An expert in the area of human performance, many of you may have learned about Dr. Wells when he served as the sport medicine analyst for the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium for the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.

Dr. Wells delivered a compelling presentation describing how some minor modifications in three key areas - one's sleep routine, diet and activity levels - can have a profound and lasting impact on a person's wellbeing. More specifically, he demonstrated how a commitment to what he describes as the "holy trinity" of healthy living - eating better, moving better and sleeping better - can lead to optimal well-being.

One anecdote in particular stands out. Dr. Wells was asked to coach a team of executives heading into a particularly challenging negotiation with another group. After ensuring the meeting was scheduled for an afternoon (a time of day when many of us feel sluggish) he fuelled his team up with a lunch featuring protein, lots of vegetables, blueberries and some avocado. Beverage choices were limited to green tea and water. Meanwhile, Dr. Wells knew the other team was eating a high carb lunch and hydrating with diet pop and coffee. Guess which team fared better over the course of what turned out to be a three-hour negotiation?

Thank you again, Dr. Wells, for sharing some key insights that will help our LWL participants transform into corporate Olympians.
